Prospect Owen Gregg is developing well at both phases of the game in 2026.
Gregg, who is currently slashing .426/.475/.574 with an OPS of 1.049 after 54 at-bats between the FCL and the FSL; talks about his plate approach in pro ball.
“It’s developing really good,” explained Gregg. “Jake Casey has helped me a lot with approach and mindset. I think approach and timing is one of the most important things in hitting. If you’re swinging at bad pitches, your swing mechanics don’t matter at all. Approach, picking good pitches to swing at, and being on time for those pitches are the most important things.”
In the field, Gregg is becoming more versatile, as he is playing in the outfield a bit in 2026.
Appearing in five games in left field has been a nice change of scenery for Gregg.
“I feel like one of my biggest tools is my ability to play anywhere,” stated Gregg. “And I feel like it’s a different perspective from competing in the infield to being in the outfield, but I feel I’ve already learned so much in those couple games that I’ve been out there. I’m learning about certain reads, certain ways to go after fly balls; it has been really rewarding knowing that the work I’m putting in is really coming to fruition.”
Also appearing in games at second base and third base in 2026, Gregg feels his infield play is developing well.
“I feel the infield coaches have really helped me be able to play multiple positions,” said Gregg. “I feel like I’m succeeding at those positions. Playing the corners, and playing up-the-middle is really different but I feel I’m executing them well.”
Moving back-and-forth between the FCL and the FSL, Gregg feels his transition up to Low-A Dunedin was a smooth one.
“I think the routine and schedule is definitely a bit different in Low-A,” stated Gregg. “You start to play night games for the first time and you’re getting into that routine of playing in front of a crowd under the lights, kind of creating new routines. But overall, I think the transition was pretty smooth and the coaching staff over there was great as well.”
Gregg noticed a slight difference with the pitchers that he faced in Low-A.
“I noticed that the pitchers could locate their secondary pitches a bit better than in the complex league,” explained Gregg. “They made things a bit more difficult in those two-strike counts when you were trying to fight off a pitch or put something in play. They can locate their secondary pitches a bit better and it makes things more challenging offensively.”
Signed in 2024, Gregg missed last season with a labrum injury suffered during spring training.
The prospect used that time to train and prepare for 2026 at the PDC in Florida.
“I put my head down and got to work,” stated Gregg. “I had a good group of guys in rehab with me, an older group of guys who taught me work ethic, how to be a pro about my business, some mental skills, and physical skills.”
