Right-handed pitcher Travis Kuhn joined the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization on Wednesday via the Rule 5 Draft.
“I was in the middle of catch play and when I got back to my car I saw a couple missed calls and texts,” explained Kuhn. “I didn’t really know what was going on at first. My buddy who is a scout that was at the winter meetings sent me a picture of the board. After that, I made a couple calls, talked to a couple guys in the org, and here we are.”
Pitching 279 innings during his minor league career; Kuhn has racked up 304 K’s and has a WHIP of 1.38.
The righty currently uses a four-pitch mix of: a 4-seam fastball, a sinker, a sweeper, and a cutter.
Known as a heavy fastball pitcher, Kuhn talks about how he uses his two fastballs every outing.
“I throw a big fastball,” stated Kuhn. “I use it for whatever I need it to be that day. Whether it’s early in counts, late in counts, or those leverage counts. I throw the sinker a lot to righties, and the 4-seam to both sides of the plate. I mix in the secondary stuff where it makes sense.”
Kuhn is planning on adding a changeup to his repertoire for the 2026 season.
“It’s something I’ve been tinkering with for a couple years now,” Kuhn said of the changeup. “I’ve finally found a grip that’s going to help me execute it at a really high level. It’s been building that trust and confidence with it the last couple years of when to throw it, where to locate it, and how it’ll play with the rest of my arsenal. I wouldn’t introduce a new pitch, if it was going to be my fifth best pitch.”
Kuhn really likes his bullpen role, “I love being in the game at the end when things are being decided,” explained Kuhn. “I’ve been a closer really since college and have taken a lot of pride in my ability to finish off games. This season I wasn’t as good in that department as I have been in the past or I’ll be in the future. I love to compete. I love being a guy that my teammates trust at the end of the gam., And I love sealing as many wins as possible.”
Welcome to the organization, Travis Kuhn!
