Right-handed pitcher Dayne Pengelly was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization a month ago out of the MLB Draft League.
Pengelly has made two starts so far for Low-A Dunedin on a pitch count since signing in July.
“Yeah, they’re trying to save me a little bit,” said Pengelly. “That way I’ll be fresh come spring training next year. I’ve already pitched quite a bit this year, so they don’t want to overextend me, but they also want me to get innings and stuff this year.”
Pitching 4 1/3 innings so far for Low-A Dunedin, Pengelly has 7 K’s, and a WHIP of 1.38.
Currently using a three-pitch mix of: a 4-seam fastball, a sinker, and a slider; Pengelly likes to tunnel his slider off of his sinker.
“I’d say the slider works better off the sinker than the 4-seam,” stated Pengelly. “The sinker has a little more movement, so the slider tunnels well off the sinker.”
The 4-seam is still relatively new for Pengelly, “The 4-seam is still pretty new to me,” Pengelly added. “But it’s nice because I can throw it at the top of the zone a little more. It gets more whiff, and it also gets guys to swing with weaker contact when I throw it in the zone.”
The righty also has two other pitches which he hasn’t used yet in the FSL.
“I also have a cutter and a splitter,” explained Pengelly. “I’m not using them currently. We’re trying to establish a really good feel for them and from there we’ll expand off of that.”
Pengelly talks about the hitters in Low-A, “Last night I had sinkers that barely missed at the bottom of the zone,” stated Pengelly. “It was an easy take for them.”
Welcome, Dayne Pengelly!
