Prospect Jackson Hornung is playing first base and outfield this year after beginning his career as a catcher.

“The transition to the outfield was a lot smoother than I had first imagined,” stated Hornung. “I’m lucky to have a lot of great teammates and coaches that helped me in the end of last season, this off-season, and during spring training. Getting a lot of reps out there has given me the confidence to play it to my full potential. I’m still working hard to get better out there but I am feeling great this season. I worked a lot on first steps and reads in the outfield and everything just came together.”

Hornung has played 26 games in LF, so far in 2025 split between High-A and Double-A.

“We like to joke around and say I’m not very fast but this season I feel I’ve improved from last season,” Hornung added. “That has definitely helped with my range in the outfield so far. But for sure with more reps and everything it will only keep getting better. I also feel being a former catcher that I have a good sense of reading balls off the bat and swings in general. That has played a huge part in me playing in the outfield from the start. Knowing how our pitchers are trying to attack each hitter allows me better insight on where the ball may go.”

Currently slashing .300/.382/.439 with an OPS of .821 after 223 at-bats in 2025; Hornung said he put a lot of work into his swing during the off-season.

“In the off-season I really just spent time refining my swing,” explained Hornung. “Having 400+ at-bats a season helps you realize what specific things are working and what things aren’t.”

The prospect also feels his footwork at first base is improving, too, “The footwork is improving,” said Hornung. “Just getting more reps over there has allowed me to feel more confident over there. Like in the outfield I’ve been able to work with a lot of great people to continue to improve and help the team defensively.”

Be sure to follow Jackson Hornung, as he continues to improve at both phases of the game.
