Right-handed pitcher Colby Martin is closing out games for Low-A Dunedin with a lot of velocity. Martin, who has a 4-seam fastball that has hit 102 mph this season; is enjoying his late inning work.
“It’s the end of the game so you have to get the job done,” said Martin. “I love the adrenaline that it brings in the 9th inning, lights on, late in the day or late in the night; I love the adrenaline there. It’s a little different when you have a big lead compared to a small lead, but either way I’m there when the team needs me.”
Pitching 10 1/3 innings for Low-A Dunedin; Martin has 13 K’s, a 0.58 WHIP, and is 3-for-3 in save opportunities.
The righty currently uses a three-pitch mix of: a 4-seam fastball, a 2-seam/sinking fastball, and a slider.
Martin focused on locating his fastball better during the off-season, “The main thing was getting in the zone more with my heater,” explained Martin. “Zone percentage was a huge goal for the off-season, along with getting better mentally. I have the tools I need physically but getting better mentally was important since baseball is a huge game of failure. I’m not always going to have my best stuff every outing, so helping me work through it mentally is important.”
Mostly working 4-seam and slider at the moment, Martin talks about his pitch repertoire.
“I’m throwing a 4-seam, a 2-seam, and a hard slider that sits high-80s,” stated Martin. “I’m mostly focusing on the 4-seam and hard slider. They’re two great pitches for me. Hopefully they continue to work well. I’ve been happy with how they’re working so far this season, so I’m sticking with them.”
Martin used to throw a curveball, but he changed it to his hard slider prior to the 2025 season.
“The slider plays well off the 4-seam,” explained Martin. “The curveball actually played well off it too, but it was a little too slow. Hitters were pretty much just taking it. The slider is a beautiful pitch for me. I’m comfortable throwing it and obviously it looks like a heater, so if they’re sitting heater, I’ll throw them a slider. It’s a pretty good swing-and-miss pitch.”
Be sure to follow Colby Martin, as he continues to close games with a lot of velocity.
