Right-handed pitcher Bobby Milacki has a great relationship with his father former major league pitcher Bob Milacki. For the younger, Milacki it’s not just a father-and-son relationship but also a pitcher-to-pitcher relationship.
“I train with him in the off-season,” said Milacki. “I’ve never been to any pitching labs or facilities. It has always been my dad and I in the backyard throwing and working on pitch shapes, command and discussing how to pitch. I talk to him after every outing. He tells me what he sees and what he would have done differently. It’s a great relationship and has really molded me to be a better pitcher today.”
Pitching at every level from rookie-ball to Triple-A in his career; Milacki talks about the advice his dad gave him as he continued to climb the minor league ladder.
“He has definitely helped level to level on stuff to expect going up,” stated Milacki. “Even being brutally honest on how things that may have worked in the lower levels, may not work going up. So, basically always being happy with great results but never shy away from trying to get better.”
Using a four-pitch mix of: a 4-seam fastball, a cutter, a sweeper, and a splitter; has worked well for Milacki who tries to tunnel his pitches off one another.
“I actually do try to tunnel pitches,” explained Milacki. “I try to understand where I went last and what I can tunnel off of that. It’s an important part of my game since I don’t have 100 mph in my back pocket.”
Pitching 17 innings between Double-A and Triple-A; Milacki has a WHIP of 1.53 and an ERA of 3.18.
“At both levels the hitters have seen a ton of pitches in their careers, so the approaches at these levels are pretty good and most guys are disciplined to their game plan.” said Milacki.
