Right-handed pitcher Bennett Flynn joined the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization last month as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame.

Flynn, who pitched one season for ND after transferring from Davidson talks about the differences between the ACC and A10 conferences.

“The ACC is a deeper league than the A10 from my experience,” explained Flynn. “The talent ceiling is closer than I had expected it might be; the best players in the A10 can definitely compete at the ACC level. With that said, the depth of talent and physical endowment was superior in the ACC. I thought my experience at Davidson was incredible, and I thought the staff and athletics program as a whole does an excellent job of cultivating a meaningful and cutting edge experience for it’s student athletes. With that said, the availability of resources for athletics was better at Notre Dame, and it provided me with the ability to grow my game in a different way.”

The righty currently uses a three-pitch mix of: a 4-seam fastball, a 12-6 knuckle curveball, and a cutter with gyro spin.

Flynn talks about how he tries to work off his fastball, “The fastball maintains a largely vertical profile and its success is often contingent of effective use of the top of the zone,” stated Flynn. “As a result, the 12-6 curveball shape works as an effective complement to missing barrels moving north-south.”

Working primarily out of the bullpen in college, Flynn talks about what he likes best about his late inning role.

“The best part of being a reliever, especially on the back end, is you get to pitch in a lot of high-leverage situations.” he said.
