Right-handed pitcher Grant Rogers is using two different arm slots and seven different pitches on the mound for Low-A Dunedin. Rogers, who began lowering his arm slot during his final season at McNeese State; talks about his transition to more of a sidearm slot with some over the top mixed in.

“Last year I kind of changed it to a sidearm slot,” explained Rogers. “I throw a cutter, a slider, a sinker, and a changeup from there. When I got to spring training I threw from there and some over the top.”

The righty also features a 4-seam fastball, a sweeper, and a splitter to round out his seven-pitch mix.

Rogers tries to get ahead in counts with his fastball, “I try to pick a good spot based on what I’ve seen from previous at-bats before I pitch,” stated Rogers. “Seeing where I can fit in a fastball to where they’ll see it, swing at it and miss, or they just won’t swing at all.”

The prospect likes having four days to scout the opposing teams hitters.

“I get to sit there and look at the hitters for four games before I pitch,” Rogers said of the rotation. “I can see how the other pitchers get them out, how the hitters react to certain pitches – which helps me figure out what pitches I should use to get them out.”

Pitching 64 innings to date; Rogers has racked up 61 K’s and is maintaining a WHIP of 1.17 in his first pro season.
