Right-handed pitcher Luis Quinones is building off his time in major league spring training with Triple-A Buffalo. Quinones, who stayed in the big league camp until March 29th, really enjoyed his experience of playing with, and learning from the major leaguers.
“I received a lot of advice from the big guys,” stated Quinones. “It was great being around them and sharing a clubhouse with them. My biggest takeaway is that we’re playing the same baseball, they just minimize the margins of error and execution is key.”
And that advice is working well for Quinones in 2024, as the righty is holding opposing hitters to a stingy .179 average against him; in his 24 innings of work for Triple-A Buffalo.
“Triple-A is just full of veterans and former big leaguers,” Quinones said of the level. “Their approach at the plate and their plan is different, they’re more disciplined.”
Quinones is still using his four-pitch mix of: a 4-seam fastball, a splitter, a curveball, and a cutter.
While his repertoire is the same, the righty is fine-tuning each pitch this season, “I haven’t added any pitches,” explained Quinones. “I’m just trying to perfect all four pitches and make them better.”
One thing Quinones can do with his pitch mix is make his cutter look like a second breaking ball.
“Technically I have one breaking ball which is a curveball,” Quinones added. “I have the cutter which I can manipulate at times to be slower with a little bigger movement.”
Working exclusively out of the bullpen this season, Quinones talks about what he likes best about that role.
“I like that I can pitch multiple times a week with multiple innings each outing.” he said.
