Prospect Devonte Brown is putting versatility on display. Brown, who has played all three outfield positions during his pro career; has been making appearances at both first base and second base since the beginning of the 2023 season.
“It hasn’t been too bad,” Brown said of the transition. “I’ve played in the infield pretty much all of my life from the time I started baseball until my sophomore year of college, that’s when I made the transition to the outfield. Infield has always been in my blood a little bit, so whenever I get a chance to take ground balls, or play in the infield for whatever reason, I’m always ready for it.”
Appearing in 22 games so far this season with Double-A New Hampshire; Brown ha made 12 starts in CF, 8 starts in RF, and 2 starts at second base.
The prospect talks about his range in the outfield, “I think it’s pretty good but it’s getting better each and every day,” explained Brown. “We have a great outfield coach here, and all of the guys here that I play outfield with, we learn from each other and bounce off of each other, so each day it’s growing and growing.”
Slashing .268/.333/.451 with an OPS of .784 after 82 at-bats in 2024; Brown talks about the current state of his plate approach.
“I’ve been a little more aggressive,” stated Brown. “A lot more strikes are being thrown, so therefore I can be a little more aggressive. Maybe I’ve been a little too aggressive at times, but right now I’m looking for pitches I can handle and get my best swing off and not miss on those pitches.”
