Catcher Payton Henry takes a lot pride in his defensive play behind the plate. Henry, who has won a minor league gold glove for his stellar defensive play; feels his game calling ability is the strongest aspect of his game.

“I feel that has always been my strong suit,” explained Henry. “I feel like I’ve been able to call a really good game my whole career. That’s something I keep building on. I take pride in the work that I do, in the reports that I write, and stuff like that. I think with the work that I’m putting in, it’s something that’ll keep improving.”

A member of the Buffalo Bisons’ this season, Henry is putting his game calling ability to good use with their talented pitching staff that features three of the Blue Jays’ top-30 prospects.

“A lot of talent here with this staff,” said Henry. “They have a good plan and I think they’re going to have a really good year this year.”

Currently slashing .233/.324/.333 after 30 at-bats this season; Henry talks about the evolution of his plate approach in pro ball.

“I think it has been really good,” stated Henry. “Starting out, it was rough getting going my first couple years in rookie-ball and the lower levels. But I feel my approach is really coming along and it’s something I can go back to every day which is good.”

Making his major league debut with the Miami Marlins in 2021, Henry reflects back on that moment fondly.

“It was the coolest thing ever,” said Henry. “A really cool moment of like ‘holy cow I finally did it’ but at the same time it was a really peaceful feeling.”

Keep working hard, Payton Henry!
