Outfielder Yhoangel Aponte is a promising up-and-coming prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays’ system. Aponte, who was signed in the 2021 International Free Agent class out of Venezuela; made it up to Low-A Dunedin in August.
The 19-year old joined the D-Jays’ after starting the season in the FCL.
Slashing .244/.358/.483 with an OPS of .841 after 176 at-bats; Aponte says his approach is based around the fastball.
“My approach is to always be ready for the fastball,” said Aponte. “I can react to everything else.”
Aponte had an increase in production in 2023, as he recorded 22 extra base hits, which included: 11 doubles, two triples, and nine home runs.
“This year I had more contact,” explained Aponte. “And with the power I have I was able to hit more balls out of the park.”
Defense has been a major focal point for Aponte since signing his professional contract, “I have been working on my defense since I signed,” stated Aponte. “I can now say that I have improved a lot at all three outfield positions.”
Most likely starting next season in Dunedin, Aponte knows what to expect from the pitchers in the FSL.
“The pitchers in the FSL are pretty similar to the pitchers in the FCL,” explained Aponte. “But there’s a little more awareness with pitches in certain counts in the FSL.”
Aponte is hoping to come back more athletic next season, “My focus this off-season is to get more athletic, so my body can stay healthy and I can be on the field whenever my team needs me,” Aponte added. “And last but more importantly, everything I’ve done and how I am is by the grace of God.”
Amen, Yhoangel Aponte!
