Right-handed pitcher Al Pesto was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization a month ago. Pesto, who pitched for Billings in the Independent Pioneer League in 2022 was definitely excited for his new opportunity.
“Signing with the Blue Jays was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream of playing affiliate ball,” said Pesto. “It was a very cool moment for me.”
Pesto’s time in affiliate ball began in the FCL before being promoted to Double-A New Hampshire.
Pitching 8 innings so far in the Blue Jays’ system, Pesto has a WHIP of 1.25 and 6 K’s on the season.
The righty had three takeaways from his time in the FCL, “My takeaways from the FCL were: work to be in good counts, have lots of confidence in going right after guys, and be ready to spin in any count.” he said.
Making one appearance so far for New Hampshire, Pesto has noticed how good the hitters are in Double-A.
“The hitters in Double-A are very good so you obviously want to stay in attack mode,” explained Pesto. “You want to try and execute everything as best as possible. Overall, the game plan is still fill up the zone.”
Currently using a three-pitch mix of: a 4-seam fastball, a slider, and a changeup; Pesto talks about how he works off his fastball.
“I work off my fastball by throwing it in the zone,” stated Pesto. “It gives me the option to either stick with it more or go to the secondary stuff.”
Pesto uses his high-90s fastball to his advantage, “I use my velocity to my advantage by trusting my stuff in the zone and not worrying too much about trying to be too fine with command.” he said.
Welcome, Al Pesto!
