Right-handed pitcher Alex Amalfi is settling into his first full season of pro ball after getting a brief taste of it a year ago.
“The nerves were still with me through my first few starts this year, but the more I get into games – the more comfortable I’ll get,” said Amalfi who pitched 8 innings for Dunedin in 2022. “So, the thing I’m looking forward to the most this season is getting a lot of innings under my belt in order for me to feel more comfortable out there.”
Pitching 14 innings so far this season; Amalfi has a 1.29 ERA and 17 K’s for Low-A Dunedin.
Amalfi uses four pitches on the mound which includes: a 4-seam fastball, a slider, a curveball, and a changeup.
The righty focused on getting more comfortable with his slider during the off-season, “The grip I use is a little odd,” Amalfi said of his slider. “But by playing catch with it, it helps me feel what works and what doesn’t. So, I locked in on a certain cue with it and it has been working a lot better and has been more consistent recently.”
With six appearances on the season, Amalfi has made three starts and three relief appearances so far in 2023.
He prefers the starting role – but will do whatever is asked of him.
“I feel my pregame routine puts me in a better position to do well rather than getting warm later in the game,” explained Amalfi. “But I have no issues coming out of the bullpen if I have to.”
Be sure to follow Alex Amalfi as he continues to get a lot of innings under his belt in 2023.
