Prospect Spencer Horwitz is working on his skills in the outfield this off-season.

“I’ve been working on versatility and getting those reps in the outfield,” explained Horwitz. “I’m trying to get better out there and more comfortable out there. I’m doing that while continuing to grow as a person, as a hitter, and maturing.”

Horwitz appeared in games at first base and in left field in 2022. While, he’s primarily a first baseman – the outfield may become his long-term role at the major league level.

And that may be what the Blue Jays’ had in mind when they added Horwitz to their 40-man roster this fall.

Being added to the 40-man was a special moment for Horwitz, “That was an exciting call I received from Joe Sclafani,” stated Horwitz. “It means a lot to be added to the roster of the team that drafted me and the team that has given me a chance at a professional career.”

Added to the roster after a great 2022 season split between Double-A and Triple-A.

Horwitz slashed .275/.391/.452 with an OPS of .843 in his 403 at-bats between the two levels.

He definitely noticed a difference between the two levels, “The defense in Triple-A was exceptional,” said Horwitz. “Maybe that was due to the shift – as there was no shift in Double-A this year. It was great competition in both leagues.”

And as a member of the 40-man roster, Horwitz will take part in Major League spring training next year.

“I’m looking forward to being around the staff and the players and playing against that high level of competition,” stated Horwitz. “Just being able to learn as much as possible. Last year I only got a few games in big league spring training, but I think this spring will be a very eye opening experience. I’m going to be a sponge and soak up as much information as possible.”

Be sure to follow Spencer Horwitz in 2023, as he continues to get comfortable in the outfield.
