Left-handed pitcher Jimmy Robbins is back on the mound after a successful Tommy John surgery and recovery. Robbins, who hasn’t pitched in a game since 2019 got into a game for Low-A Dunedin on April 22nd and pitched three innings, striking out four.
But for Robbins it wasn’t just the great outing that stood out, it was the opportunity to be back doing what he loves.
“Getting back on the mound after such a long time felt amazing,” said Robbins. “It felt like a huge breath of fresh air to be back where I feel like I belong. I’m confident in where I’m at and I’m really looking forward to what the near future holds for me.”
While, the long recovery wasn’t ideal for Robbins, it gave him an opportunity to fine-tune his secondary pitches more when he came out of rehab.
“I’ve fine-tuned the arsenal a little bit since coming out of rehab,” explained Robbins. “Having a hard ‘cutter/slider’ and a big sweeper is what has shown to be most effective for me with breaking balls. I have really good feel with them and can mix them well. Both of them have really good movement profiles off of each other. I also put a big emphasis on improving the changeup which was almost non-existent for me before. Now it’s a pitch with a good profile that I feel confident in mixing.”
Robbins is back to where he wants to be thanks in part to the people around him who helped make the process smoother.
“Tommy John recovery is no joke, but I was fortunate enough to have a smooth recovery,” stated Robbins. “I had a great staff around me and a good group of guys in rehab that made the process less frustrating.”
Welcome back Jimmy Robbins!
