Right-handed pitcher Kyle Johnston is enjoying his new home in the Toronto Blue Jays system. Johnston, who came over from the Washington Nationals in the Daniel Hudson trade in 2019 reflects on the trade.
“It was sudden,” Johnston recalls. “The Nationals said they enjoyed having me in their system, but it’s a business. I’m enjoying my time with the Blue Jays now.”
And his time with the Blue Jays is going well, too, as Johnston is with the double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats this season.
Johnston has struck out 28, and has a WHIP of 1.41 after 38 1/3 innings; with the Fisher Cats.
His success on the mound comes from the feel he has for his three-pitch mix.
Currently using a mix of a 4-seam fastball, a slider, and a changeup in his repertoire; gives Johnston multiple options every outing.
“It varies every outing,” explained Johnston. “Some outings are fastball heavy, some are slider heavy, and others are changeup heavy. It really depends on what’s working that day.”
Feeling at home in the Blue Jays system; Johnston loves the family feel within the organization from the major league level on down.
“It’s all about the team here,” stated Johnston. “That was a big takeway for me during spring training. It starts with the big league team all the way down. You see it when young guys get called up to the majors and they get treated like family right away.”
Be sure to follow Kyle Johnston’s progress, as he continues to enjoy being a part of the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization.
