Left-handed pitcher Jimmy Robbins found a lot of success on the mound for Rollins College in 2019. Robbins, who racked up 105 K’s in 76 2/3 innings pitched; is ready to make the jump up to pro ball in the upcoming weeks.
And he shouldn’t have trouble with the transition, as Robbins already features four pitches. Currently using a mix of a fastball, a slider, a changeup, and a curveball in his repertoire; Robbins is especially proud of his fastball, which he can use in any count for a swing-and-miss pitch.
“I get a lot of swings and misses with my fastball, so I use it with a lot of confidence to get ahead of, and put away batters,” explained Robbins, who was selected in the 20th round. “I’m comfortable using it as a swing-and-miss pitch in any count, and I believe my off-speed pitches play really well off of it.”
His ability to mix up his pitches will play well in any role in pro ball. Performing both as a starter and a closer in college will definitely make that transition easier.
“Rollins helped me prepare for pro ball by allowing me to pitch in big games as both a starter and a closer,” said Robbins. “I got a taste of both roles, and having success in both makes me feel really confident with any role.”
But no matter the role, Robbins will continue to be challenging against any hitter that enters the box against him, especially lefties.
“I do take pride in being tough on lefties,” stated Robbins. “I know that I have to take advantage every time a lefty gets in the box. But I take pride in getting hitters out regardless of what side of the plate they stand on.”
Be sure to keep an eye out for Jimmy Robbins, as he’ll join one of the Blue Jays’ affiliates soon.
