Some might say that outfielder Will Robertson is right at home with the Blue Jays. Robertson, who went from being a member of the Creighton Bluejays’ to a Toronto Blue Jays’ 4th round pick; has noticed a slight difference between college and pro ball.
“The hitters have a better approach and don’t miss pitches,” said Robertson. “Pitchers have better stuff and locate it better and don’t give you as many mistakes in pro ball.”
And with that in mind, Robertson has made a few adjustments to his approach since turning pro.
“I feel coming into pro ball it was very inconsistent,” Robertson said of his approach. “I’ve tried to concrete some things, but I’m also looking more to what the pitcher does well to make a game-to-game approach off of that while sticking with some things that never change for me.”
His approach is working well so far with Double-A New Hampshire. Currently slashing .259/.337/.435 with an OPS of .772 after 85 at-bats has been a great start for Robertson.
Especially hot during the month of May, Robertson has a .594 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.004 in his nine games so far this month.
Robertson is finding success at the plate in spite of the elite pitching he’s facing in Double-A.
“All of the pitchers are good,” explained Robertson. “They command their pitches better. They usually have at least one plus plus pitch to get you out on and they know how to use it to get you out.”
“I think just how good the pitching is night in and night out,” Robertson added about the jump up to Double-A. “Guys coming out of the pen have really good stuff and throw hard as well so there’s no let off. As a hitter you are constantly making adjustments to try and be the best you can be for that day.”
Adding a little versatility to his game since turning pro, Robertson has appeared in games at all three outfield spots in pro ball.
Playing exclusively in right field at Creighton, Robertson is enjoying his new role in pro ball.
“I like how I’ve been able to become somewhat versatile,” stated Robertson. “I can play all three outfield spots and it allows me to help the team wherever I’m needed.”
