Kevin Pillar was the Blue Jays 32nd round pick in 2011 out of Cal State Dominguez Hills. Currently in Lansing, Pillar leads the Lugnuts in batting average (.309), stolen bases (27), and RBIs (39) and has hit both of the Lugnuts grand slams on the season.
Pillar’s batting average ranks sixth best in the Midwest League but his offense it not the only thing that has had Lugnuts fans talking, as Pillar has made numerous highlight reel catches in the outfield. I had the opportunity to ask Kevin about his all star appearance, batting patience, and his amazing catches here’s what he had to say:
How did it feel to be a Midwest League All Star? – “It was a great experience and an honour to be recognized as one of the league’s best players”.
What was your reaction being drafted by the Blue Jays? – “I was incredibly excited. I really like the team philosophy and it’s a honour to be drafted by any team and be given a chance to play professional baseball.”
Being one of the best batters in the Midwest League where does that discipline come from? – “I work a lot with our hitting coach on mastering plate discipline”
You make fearless diving plays in the outfield all the time where does that mentality come from? – “I believe in the Pete Rose mentality when you play you give it all you have all the time”
Did you have a favorite team growing up? – “I grew up in LA and was a huge Dodgers fan”
Did you have a favorite player growing up? - “Yes, Cal Ripken Jr.”
