The day that Blue Jays fans and Jays prospects fans have waited for has finally arrived  - an injury-free Brett Lawrie has gotten his promotion to the major leagues. Today, it was announced that outfielder, Travis Snider, would be getting demoted to AAA, and in return, third-basemen, Brett Lawrie, would replace him in the majors. But before he takes his first major league swing Friday night against the Orioles, here is, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly about the young star:

Brett Lawrie hit.353 with 64 runs scored and 24 doubles, 6 triples, 18 homeruns in 69 games with the Las Vegas 51s

The Good:

There is no doubt that the young 21-year-old Canadian is ranked the top Blue Jays’ prospect and the 40th top prospect in the minors for a reason.  So far, in 292 at-bats with the Las Vegas 51s, Lawrie has held a batting average of .353 with 64 runs scored, 24 doubles, 6 triples, 18 homeruns and a .661 slugging percentage.

The Bad:

The 2008 number one pick for the Milwaukee Brewers needs to focus on working the count and taking pitches. He tends to swing early at a lot of pitches, including balls that are down and away. At the moment he has almost a 2-1 ratio in terms of walks to strikeouts (26 walks; 53 strikeouts). Another thing to keep in mind, is that he tends to crowd the plate, he’s already been hit on the hand on three occasions this season – 2 of which he had to be placed on the DL.

The Ugly:

Lawrie was acquired by the Blue Jays on December 6th, 2010 when he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Shaun Marcum. While he was a second basemen with the Brewers, Lawrie was moved to third-base with the Blue Jays organization. There is no doubt that his speed and bat are no issue, but, because of the move, his defense has been known to be a factor. In his first season playing third base, (69 games) Lawrie has 16 errors and a fielding percentage of .925. Fortunately, however, most of the errors came early in the season and his abilities in the field have drastically improved as the season has enrolled.

Overall, however, it is evident that “The Good” definitely outweighs both “The Bad” and “The Ugly.” Everyone at Jays Prospects .com wishes Brett Lawrie the best of luck in his major league debut against the Orioles Friday night.
