With an overall record of 59 – 49, the Dunedin Blue Jays sit in 2nd place, 7 games behind Daytona. Over their last 10 games, the Dunedin Blue Jays have been on a bit of a tear, going 7 – 3 while riding a current 4 game win streak. Making matters more impressive, is the fact, that several players are either on the injured list or have been promoted to higher levels within the Toronto Blue Jays system. As a result of these factors, several players have slid right in to the Dunedin lineup and provided the team with stability other team’s wish they had. Today we will be looking at three pitchers that have been great since coming to Dunedin.

Andrew Liebel SP – This is the Liebel’s third stint with the Dunedin Blue Jays, and he already looks more confident than in his previous two years with the club. Liebel started the 2011 season with the Blue Jays Gulf Coast League affiliate, before moving on to Lansing, and then returning early last week to Dunedin. In two games, this season for Dunedin, Liebel has shown fans and critics alike that he can be a very serviceable pitcher in the big leagues down the line. Thus far, Liebel has gone 2- 0 with a 1.50 ERA with a 7 /3 K/ BB ratio.

On Monday, Liebel had the biggest start of his career, as he pitched against the St. Lucie Mets and the recently acquired Zach Wheeler. For those unfamiliar with Wheeler, he was the San Francisco Giants top pitching prospect that was traded to New York for outfielder Carlos Beltran.

The right hander pitched 6 strong innings giving up only one run while striking out 2 and walking 3. Dunedin would win the game in impressive fashion, by a score of 9 – 1, torching Wheeler for 6 runs.

Justin Phillabaum RP – As I mentioned earlier, the Dunedin Blue Jays have still managed to stay competitive even though they have suffered a few injuries. Two of the biggest injuries on the team are to closer Wes Etheridge and starting pitcher Asher Wojciechowski. For the former, the Dunedin Blue Jays were left scrambling for a late inning relief pitcher to fill in while Etheridge recovers.

Enter Justin Phillabaum, a relief pitcher in the Washington Nationals organization, whom has struggled the last few years. Phillabaum made his debut with Dunedin on July 30th, striking out 1 while retiring 2 batters. It is still really early to tell where he projects long term, but right now he appears to be a stop gap until Wes Etheridge gets better.

Drew Hutchinson SP – After starting the season with the Lansing Lugnuts, Drew Hutchinson has made an excellent transition into the Dunedin Blue Jays starting rotation. Hutchinson starts tonight for Dunedin as they take on FSL North basement dweller Brevard County.

In theory, Hutchinson, a player that has averaged 6 innings in 7 starts, should be able to dominate a bad Brevard County team. Hutchinson last pitched on July 28 against Jupiter, his best start of the season. During that game, he pitched 6 innings, allowing only two runs while also striking out 7 with no walks. If he is able to stay healthy, Hutchinson should be in the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen by 2015.
