Seneca High School pitcher, Kevin Comer was drafted in the 57th pick in this year’s Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. Interestingly, all fans know about Comer right now is that he is from New Jersey, is a 6-foot-3, 205 pounds right-handed pitcher, that throws between 90 and 94 mph… and… that he is still deciding whether to play pro and signing with the Toronto Blue Jays or going to college and playing baseball at Vanderbilt University. (Yes, the same school that produced David Price, the No. 1 pick of the 2007 MLB Draft and current Tampa Bay Rays ace).

Kevin Comer is a 6-foot-3, 205 RHP from New Jersey, still deciding whether to play pro and signing with the Toronto Blue Jays or going to college and playing baseball at Vanderbilt University.

To find out more about the young star, I was fortunate to be able to ask him a few questions and get to know a little more information about the young 18-year-old.

To start, I wanted to know what it was like to be drafted, Comer explained: “It was absolutely surreal to be drafted by the [Blue] Jays! I was overwhelmed with excitement and I will never forget that experience.”

Next, many were curious who Comer idolized in MLB both presently and in the past. Comer quickly stated, “Despite being a pitcher, I grew up loving the game play of Ken Griffey Jr. Right now, I really enjoy watching Roy Halladay play since I am from the Philadelphia area.”

There is no doubt that Comer has a lot to be proud of. As a Junior, Comer went 6-3 with a miniscule 1.46 ERA and struck out 100 batters. On this note, Comer was asked what his favourite moment was on the mound. He stated, “One of the best moments I have ever experienced was taking the mound and coming away with the victory in our High School State Championship. Without a doubt, it was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.”

What many fans do not know is that Comer is that he also played professional basketball (shooting guard and point guard in high school) and that he can dunk! Then again, it probably helps that his mother played professional basketball in Asia. Evidently, the athletic gene is also passed on through his father’s side as well as his father played NCAA football at Kansas! Keeping this in mind, Comer was asked how his parents’ support has impacted his early career: “There is no doubt that my parents have supported me and have helped me get to where I am. I can easily admit that I would not have made it to where I am now without them.

As has been concluded, Comer has a lot of talent on the mound. He has a four-seam, 94 MPH fastball, a two-seam 90-91 MPH fastball, an 82-83 MPH changeup, and a 76-80 spike curveball. Interestingly, his windup is also deceptive so this makes his pitches that much more difficult to hit. Interestingly, Comer states, that his best skill on the mound his simplicity and composure. What was more interesting, however, is what he mentioned his best skill was off the mound. “To be honest, off the field, I must admit that my best skills are my moves on the dance floor.” While he added, laughing, “If you can get me dancing that is.”

Overall, we would like to thank Kevin Comer for his time and wish him the best of luck in the future, whether that is with Vanderbilt University or with the Toronto Blue Jays. (Though we do have a preference!)
