Dunedin Blue Jays Flying Under The Radar
The Dunedin Blue Jays are one of two single A affiliates of the Toronto Blue Jays. Playing in the Florida State League, the Dunedin Blue Jays are an impressive 50 – 43 through 93 games of the 140 game season. Dunedin is also the home of some of the Toronto Blue Jays best prospects, and major league stars that are on rehab assignments. However, having said that, the Dunedin Blue Jays are where they are today, because of the entire team and not just the top prospects. Here is a look at 2 of the Dunedin Blue Jays most unheralded heroes.
Nestor Molina SP – At 6 ‘ 1 179 pounds and only 22 years old, Nestor Molina has gone from a relatively unknown prospect, to one of the most important ones on the Dunedin Blue Jays roster. While fellow teammate Deck McGuire receives the majority of the credit for Dunedin’s success this season, Molina is a player that could be with the Toronto Blue Jays in no time.
Nestor Molina was signed as a non drafted free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2006. Since being signed, Molina has put up absolutely incredible numbers. In 2011 alone, Molina is presently 9 – 3 with a 2.65 ERA and 97/ 9 K/BB ratio. What’s perhaps most impressive about this future big league starter, is that he has held opponents to a 246 average all season long. The only obstacle for Molina is the amount of hits he gives up per inning, as right now he has given up 82 hits in 88.1 innings.
John Talley 1B – Big John Talley has turned heads this season in Dunedin, as he has helped the Dunedin Blue Jays to one of their best records in recent memory. With Adam Lind keeping first base warm for now, Talley could be the future Toronto Blue Jays first baseman when the team finally contends. At 22 years old, Big John is still a very raw talent, but he is showing fans and experts alike, that the first base position is covered for the foreseeable future.
Talley is built like a truck, as he stands at 6 ‘3 220 pounds, and has a batting average of 240. What this can tell fans right away, is that Big John is a power hitter, as his 11 HR and 38 RBI to go along with 63 hits in 70 games would indicate. With the Dunedin Blue Jays in a dog fight to stay atop the division in the Florida State League, look for Talley to get the majority of starts the rest of the way.
