Blue Jays Minor League Transactions: July 11 – July 17
It’s time yet again for @Iainsut to have a look at the previous week of July 11 to 17th. This week the catcher shuffle continued some unfortunate news from the DSL Blue Jays and the end of the Blue Jay road for one player.
July 11
- Las Vegas 51s activated 3B Jayson Nix.
- Lansing Lugnuts placed LHP John Anderson on the 7-Day disabled list.
- New Hampshire Fisher Cats placed SS Jonathan Diaz on the temporarily inactive list.
- Yan Gomes assigned to New Hampshire Fisher Cats from Las Vegas 51s
Jayson Nix was finally activated by the 51s and hit two HR to start the time in his new town. Jonathan Diaz after less than a week removed from the disabled list was placed on the temporarily inactive list. This is usually due to personal business and short lived. Diaz returned to active duty on the 14th. As I mentioned above, the catcher shuffle starts with Yan Gomes returning to New Hampshire, in this case presumably to make roster room for Jayson Nix.
July 12
- RHP Andrew Liebel assigned to Lansing Lugnuts from Dunedin Blue Jays.
- Dunedin Blue Jays placed OF Brad Glenn on the 7-Day disabled list.
- Deivy Estrada assigned to Bluefield Blue Jays from GCL Blue Jays.
- Las Vegas 51s placed DH Jason Lane on the 7-Day disabled list.
- Jose Vargas assigned to GCL Blue Jays from Bluefield Blue Jays.
- Matt Abraham assigned to GCL Blue Jays from Bluefield Blue Jays
Andrew Liebel fills John Anderson’s spot in the lugnuts’ rotation and put up a very solid 6 innings, 1 ER, 0 BB outing. Power hitting Brad Glenn is reportedly on the DL due to a lower body injury which also opens up a roster spot for the return of Jon Talley from suspension. 18 year old Deivy Estrada made a jump to Bluefield from the GCL Blue Jays and put up a very nice debut, 5 innings, 0 ER 0BB, 3K. Jose Vargas, overwhelmed starting in Bluefield dropped back to the GCL making room for Estrada.
July 13
- Chris Schaeffer assigned to Vancouver Canadians from Bluefield Blue Jays.
- David Rollins assigned to Vancouver Canadians from Bluefield Blue Jays
- C Joe Bowen assigned to Dunedin Blue Jays from New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
- Dunedin Blue Jays activated 1B Jon Talley.
- Bluefield Blue Jays placed 3B Kellen Sweeney on the 7-Day disabled list.
- Matt Johnson assigned to Bluefield Blue Jays from Vancouver Canadians.
- RHP Thomas Berryhill assigned to Bluefield Blue Jays.
- Tim Mahler assigned to Bluefield Blue Jays from Dunedin Blue Jays.
Chris Schaeffer after hitting .378 in 10 games with Bluefield was bumped up to Vancouver to see how he makes out in stronger competition. Sitting next to him on the airplane David Rollins took his 1.25 ERA in 4 starts and made an excellent start in Vancouver with 5 innings, 1ER, 0BB and 6K. Matt Johnson appears to have been a bit out of his depth in Vancouver and swapped places with Chris Schaeffer in Bluefield. Thomas Berryhill, recently dropped by the Braves organization was signed by the Blue Jays on the 12th and assigned to Bluefield. Tim Mahler, part of the catcher shuffle dropped back from his one game appearance in Dunedin to Bluefield. Well traveled catcher Joe Bowen returns to Dunedin from a short stay with the Fishercats, having been displaced by Yan Gomes.
July 14
- DSL Blue Jays placed RHP Aderly De La Cruz on the restricted list.
- DSL Blue Jays placed LHP Luillyn Guillen on the restricted list.
- 3B Brett Lawrie assigned to Dunedin Blue Jays from Las Vegas 51s.
- New Hampshire Fisher Cats activated SS Jonathan Diaz from the temporarily inactive list.
- RHP Reidier Gonzalez assigned to New Hampshire Fisher Cats from Las Vegas 51s.
- RHP Robert Ray assigned to Las Vegas 51s from New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
- Las Vegas 51s activated C Ryan Budde from the 7-Day disabled list
In unfortunate news two recently acquired DSL players, Aderly De La Cruz and Luillyn Guillen tested positive for steroids and were suspended for 50 games. After an ugly stay in Las Vegas, Rey Gonzalez returned to New Hampshire and Robert Ray heads the other way. Completing the catcher shuffle Ryan Budde returns from the disabled list.
July 15
- New Hampshire Fisher Cats placed LHP Frank Gailey on the 7-Day disabled list retroactive to July 13, 2011.
- New Hampshire Fisher Cats activated LHP Evan Crawford from the 7-Day disabled list.
- RHP Harold Mozingo assigned to Dunedin Blue Jays.
- Dunedin Blue Jays released RHP Ryan Shopshire
Frank Gailey and Evan Crawford produced a zero sum roster event by replacing one another in New Hampshire. Mozingo gets a second chance by signing with the Blue Jays after being released by the Royals system and joins Dunedin. And Ryan Shopshire hit the end of the road in the Blue Jays system having been released.
And that covers this week. In the coming week we should see what happens with Jesse Litsch coming to the end of his rehab assignment. The expectation is he’ll likely join Las Vegas which of course will produce a ripple through the system.
